Artist GLEN MELVILLE was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1959. After graduating from high school he served as a police officer for three years before making a 180-degree career change. Despite having no formal training, he established a career in advertising and graphic design until immigrating to Canada in 2009. He has exhibited in South Africa, and more recently in British Columbia. Winning the Show Designers Choice Award at the 2009 Sidney Fine Art Show was the perfect start to his new life in Canada. He has since won a Jurors Choice Award at the 2011 Sidney show, plus an honourable mention. To top it all off, in 2016 Glen won Best In Show at the Sidney Fine Art show.
Artist Statement
I try to capture the time-ravaged beauty of the evocative subjects that fascinate me. I work in acrylic and oil, or a combination of both. Composition, texture, and dramatic lighting all play a part in achieving the intriguing quality of the final work. My subject matter is varied: be it a weathered totem pole, a well-worn kitchen appliance, or a derelict barn, I strive to depict them in a way that resonates with the viewer. The response that I hope to elicit is one of fond recollection of, perhaps, a simpler time. And finding just the right title, poignant or whimsical, is always rewarding!
